Sacro Occipital Technic (SOT) is one of the most respected and
heavily researched techniques in the Chiropractic profession. It
has been in existence for over 75 years. It is a very powerful
technique.
There are many different aspects to SOT and it would be impossible
to give a comprehensive description in just a few short paragraphs.
But, in a nutshell, SOT is concerned with the relationship between
the sacroiliac (SI) joints (where your spine rests on your hip
bones) and the bones of the cranium (skull). The SI joints are
where the upper body joins with the lower body, and are our body’s
foundation—like the foundation of a house. Subluxations of
the SI joints affect the entire structure and neurology of the
body. The SI joints and the cranial bones are directly connected by
a membrane called the dura mater. The dura mater encases the
brain and spinal cord, and within it is a fluid called cerebrospinal
fluid (CSF). Subluxations in the SI joints or cranial bones affect
the smooth flow of CSF, therefore causing interference with the
functioning of the central nervous system.
The cornerstone of SOT is the adjustment we call, “blocking.” This
consists of placing padded, wedge-shaped blocks in a specific
configuration under your hip bones, then allowing your own body
weight and respiratory motion to gently and precisely correct the
subluxation. Since the SI joints and cranial bones are connected,
adjustments or subluxations to one will affect the other.
Therefore, cranial adjusting is also a very important part of SOT.
Cranial adjustments are done with a very light touch and are always
very gentle.
SOT was recently featured in The American Chiropractor
magazine as one of the Ten Great Chiropractic Techniques.
